Practical InformationWhere can I go?Where can I go for a Nuclear Medicine examination? by Eric Laurent, MD, CHIREC Group, Belgium
The physician who prescribed the exam will not fail to recommend you to one or several services with which he collaborates. You can also make contact with hospitals in your region so they can orientate you to their own Nuclear Medicine Department. In all cases, an appointment will have to be made with the service in order to plan the investigation. Some procedures, however, are only carried out in specific centres which will be indicated to you by your physician. It is the case with PET-Scans: as they are costly and mainly dedicated to cancer diseases, their infrastructure is only available in large hospital centres, notably academic. Treatments which are administered by isotopes, e.g. radioactive Iodine for thyroid diseases, require transitory isolation in a room dedicated to this effect, and that only some centres provide. |
